It was a time of deep investigation into the question, ‘Do I really want to live in this country?’ As I usually used to do in these moments, I threw a conversation party around that exact question. Inviting, of course, other people who had past experiences living abroad already. It had been a while since I, personally, was away from N. America (Ireland in the early 2000s was a home away from home for a time), and I was deeply curious about how it might work out to go away again. This time, without the comforts of, say, a ‘secure’ job or some other more fixed, more common approach. The people who came gave me loads to think about. And, I believe, inspired one another to ask new questions, too. I did this event two times: at Mad Hatters in Durham NC and later, at Havana.
